A boatlift is a mechanical structure that can vertically move a water-filled caisson, allowing a ship to be transported. This enables the ship to be lifted to a higher or lower level in a canal. boatlifts can overcome a much larger difference in water levels at once compared to locks, resulting in significant time savings. Well-known boatlifts include Strepy Thieu in Belgium and Scharnebeck Luneburg in Germany.
